[interview] Sunit Sachdev, manager of Caterpillar inc.

How important are eco-friendly technologies when it comes to the heavy machine industry?

-Caterpillar is very concerned about the environment and has made substantial investments in this area. Some examples of this are our clean engines, hybrid machines, machines that deliver greater productivity with less fuel usage and our remanufacturing business, which refurbishes used parts to give them a second life, thereby leading to less waste of the world`s resources. We also support environmental initiatives throughout the world through our charitable foundation.

What do you think about POSCO Global EVI Forum 2010? Please tell me your impression about POSCO EVI`s strategy.

-I think the POSCO forum is very timely and very well planned. The topics of sustainability and early vendor involvement are very relevant to Caterpillar. Through early vendor involvement, which we call supplier collaboration at Caterpillar, we can work together to provide our customers with the most advanced products that solve the world`s problems. Through this collaboration, we can design and manufacture products that use less resources to make and deliver more value to the customers in the form of greater productivity - the solutions we produce thus use much less energy and do more work for every unit of energy used. We were also very impressed with the collaboration examples you showed that involved three to four companies, from POSCO, the steel processor, the steel fabricator and the machine maker. This level of collaboration is rare and can provide a good learning opportunity for Caterpillar.

Please tell me about POSCO as a partner and your expectations and Impressions of POSCO.

-POSCO is a leading edge global steelmaker with a lot of technical depth. We have always been very impressed with POSCO. Caterpillar too is a global company. Hence, we should be able to find business opportunities together across the globe. It is our sincere hope that through our participation in the Global EVI forum, Caterpillar and POSCO can form a long lasting business relationship.
